Artifacts: Vacant Sands
Artifacts: Vacant Sands explores how sand is dredged and extracted from the earth during excavation sites during a time of expansion and urbanization. Desert sand as a medium was sourced from banal sites of human construction that may vary from sewage pipes, electric lines, artificial lakes, building foundation amongst other dredging operations. They are collected, casted, preserved, and archived through their forms.
The resulting extracted mounds now stand as the documented ‘artifacts’ of their former environments.
The project was commissioned by the Cultural Foundation, Abu Dhabi under the Art Residency intiative.
