	Tree Ties

Tree Ties is a visual commentary on the union of states as combined masses of land within nature.
The collection of native Ghaf (Prospis Cineraria) trees on the site in Dubai served as inspiration for the concept. The project weaves together seven Ghaf trees with land and water.&#38;nbsp; Tree Ties is presented as a visually thin platform that is elevated from the ground level. The project gains its geometry as it intersects seven existing trees at the site. The raised platform invites viewers to get lost in the trees’ canopies and contemplate the blurring of boundaries within our environment. The intervention also includes a water feature which pays tribute to the UAE’s historical seafaring culture and the role trade played in the emergence of the city states. Water flows through, around and off the platform onto the ground. The water is recycled from the ground level as it perforates resin-bound gravel matching the existing mulch sand cover on the site. A concealed water pump keeps the water flowing constantly through the platform.

Tree Ties reminds us that all land, whether demarcated or consolidated, belongs to nature and should be preserved as such.

Shifting Sands

Shifting Sands is an installation that engages with the concept of land reclamation, which has dramatically
reshaped the shoreline of Abu Dhabi’s Corniche. Sand is imported, transported and filled in order to
reclaim areas for inhabitation. Since this process is no longer evident, the project reminds the viewers of
the Corniche’s origins, where what is now land was once water.

Shifting Sands resonates with the city’s rapid urban development and transformation, by showcasing the
process of reclamation through 3D printed components filled with sand. The installation emphasizes the
collective role of society in shaping the spaces we inhabit, while also prompting reflection on the
environmental implications of land reclamation. By allowing visitors to actively engage with the sand filled
components, Shifting Sands underscores the theme of human interaction with nature in a city that is
constantly redefining the boundaries between the natural and the synthetic.

Coralscape

Coralscape references the marine heritage of the UAE and its
historic and cultural influences. Coral stones were a locally available natural
resource that was essential to the development of the UAE because they played a
key role in pre-oil architecture of the region.

Three walls stand at various angles to yield a dynamic
spatial experience for the visitors. The secondary frame within the walls
allows some of the stones to seem suspended over a gradient. The porosity of
the material is reflected in its arrangement as the design allows for a degree
of transparency across the walls.

Red was chosen as the color for the grid to bring awareness
to the current state of the oceans. Pollution, overfishing and other manmade
problems has limited the growth of natural resources.

Coralscape pays tribute to the architectural history of the
UAE and the materials that helped create it. The project aims to provide a rich
visual experience that offers a glimpse of historical seafaring culture of the
Gulf and an increased awareness of its future.

		<description>

Under the Loom

Under the Loom takes its cultural and formal inspiration
from the traditional weaving craft “Al Sadu”. Al Sadu was practiced by tribal
Bedouin women in the Arabian Peninsula. The yarn is handspun on a drop spindle
and then woven using a floor loom. These woven products were essential to the
nomadic lifestyle as they were used for tents, carpets and saddles. The process
was also considered a social activity as women would gather in groups and weave
while reciting poetry and telling folk tales. After the nomads settled the
demand for such art declined and was replaced by modern technology. The skill
is passed on from generation to generation and with only a handful of
practitioners today, Al Sadu faces extinction.

Under the Loom pays tribute to this ancient traditional art form
and the women who practiced it. The pandemic has highlighted the importance of
art in crises as many of us have turned to crafts as a form of self-expression
in our isolation. The proposal features a wooden fame, representative of the
loom and has attached ropes. The diamond shape and symmetry of the composition
stays true to the symbolism of the craft. The unwoven nature of the ropes
exemplifies the lost art of weaving and please with the viewer to salvage it.

The proposal reemphasizes the role arts play in the culture
and heritage of a community and envisions a future where we can gather once
again to practice it.

Kapok

The Kapok series is a line of furniture prototypes made from treated Desert Cotton. Desert

Cotton is a fully developed material sourced from the native shrubs of Aerva Javanica or known

more traditionally as Tuwaim. The shrub is commonly found around sandy roadsides and beach

coasts around UAE. Desert Cotton has been intensively screened, dried and treated to be used as

stuffing for upholstery. The natural material uses exponentially less water since it adapts to saline

soil conditions and does not require the use of pesticides compared to other plant-based stuffing.

The innovation of the first plant-based stuffing in the UAE uncovers a deeply rooted practice of

using materials from the landscape. It proves an existing synchronous humble understanding of

the environment that allowed both the nomadic man and nature to thrive.

The Kapok series investigates how it can be contained in fabric. To control its free movement

within the fabric, it has been stuffed in tight sections of a draped cushion. The draped cushion

was used as a wrapped design element covering a steel frame. The resulting form provides an

elevated comfortable and soft plush seat that one can almost sink into.

	Breath &#124; able

Breath &#124; able is an installation about a dystopian future that monetizes Air as a medium of value. A medium that has evolved to become a ground of survival. In this capitalist imaginary, it becomes a currency that determines one’s personal space of air consumption. Ownership of air becomes a defining space in relationship to the body. The semi-transparent fabric acts as this imagined boundary and is experienced differently according to where you are placed in this system of varying breathable mediums.

The installation is comprised of wood, pvc pipes and tulle fabric sprayed with an ink gradient.
